Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal Specialists

Root canal treatment involves the removal of diseased or damaged dental pulp from within the root canal. It also includes cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system, and sealing it to protect it from further infection. This procedure preserves not only the tooth itself, but also the surrounding tissue, which could be at risk if left untreated.

A root canal is a procedure that is necessary when the nerve chamber of a tooth is accessed by a large cavity or when the tooth has broken. In such cases, regular fillings are unable to resolve the issue and can lead to significant pain as bacteria enters the nerve or an abscess form beneath the roots in the jawbone.

At Harbour Dental Clinic, we do our utmost to save teeth that are heavily decayed, damaged or infected, instead of extracting them. Utilising the latest in root canals treatment methods and local anaesthetics, we aim to reduce any potential discomfort. In fact, leaving a decaying tooth untreated could be far more painful than undergoing the procedure.

Root Canals Treatment Procedure?

Root canal procedures are typically conducted by an experienced endodontist or general dentist and usually take one or two visits. However, complex treatments may require extra appointments to ensure a successful outcome.

Our staff will first, conduct dental X-rays to check the extent of the damage.

You also receive a local anaesthetic to control pain,

The area around the affected tooth will be numb from a local anaesthetic to reduce discomfort and make the process smoother.

Following this, our professionals will go on to take away any decay and may even need to create an opening in order to access the deteriorating pulp chamber. With great care and using specialised dental tools, the infected or damaged pulp is then extracted.

After the diseased pulp has been taken out, the pulp chamber and root canals are detoxified and refurbished. To optimize the filling process, they may also need to be altered and widened.

If the root canal requires multiple visits, a temporary filling is placed in the crown to protect the tooth and keep out debris and saliva.

After the Treatment

Once our team has treated you, your restored tooth should look natural and function normally. We recommend good oral hygiene to ensure that your new crown can last you for years to come. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A Root Canal is a dental treatment to save a badly damaged or infected tooth. The inside of your tooth, called the pulp, contains nerves and blood vessels. If this pulp gets infected, it can cause pain and swelling. During a root canal, the dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it up. This relieves pain and prevents further infection. While the procedure might sound scary, modern techniques make it comfortable and effective!

You may need a root canal if you have:

  • Deep decay that reaches the pulp
  • A cracked or chipped tooth that exposes the pulp
  • Repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
  • Severe gum disease that affects the pulp
  • An abscessed tooth causing pain, swelling, or drainage

The tooth may darken slightly after a root canal. However, your dentist can offer options like bleaching or crowns to improve its appearance.

No, the procedure is typically painless thanks to local anaesthesia. You may experience some discomfort afterwards, but your dentist can prescribe pain medication if needed.

The procedure usually takes one or two appointments depending on the complexity of the case.

With proper care, a root canal can last for many years, even a lifetime. However, factors like oral hygiene and continued tooth damage can impact its longevity.

You may need to avoid hard or crunchy foods for a few days after the procedure, but you can resume your normal diet gradually.
