A brief guide to braces with 6 Month Smiles by Harbour Dental

When you are choosing to undertake any cosmetic option, it is important to know what to expect.

At a glance, it may appear that all braces have the same procedure; a mould is taken of your teeth, the brace is fitted and then you have to return to the dental surgery periodically to have it tightened. While this is certainly a very simplified overview of what occurs with an orthodontic brace, it is very rarely the case when it comes to cosmetic, clear or invisible braces. Indeed, with modern technologies such as 3D scanners and wireless aligners, when you undertake a cosmetic aligner as an adult, the process can be quite different.

When you are given the all-clear by our team to begin cosmetic orthodontic corrections with 6 Month Smiles in Northern Ireland, it is important to know what to expect before you get in the chair.

At Harbour Dental, our team are very proud to be able to offer suitable patients 6 Month Smiles in Northern Ireland. So, what does the treatment process with this clear brace entail? Read on to find out!

Consultation

Curious if you are suitable for 6 Month Smiles in Northern Ireland?

When you attend our surgery, our team will assess your suitability for this brace by examining the position of your teeth and your general oral health. Remember, this brace is purely cosmetic and cannot be used to straighten crooked molars or to correct complex orthodontic issues.

If our team is satisfied, they will take an impression of your teeth using a mould, which will then be sent to a laboratory.

Fitting

Once your custom-fitted braces arrive at our surgery, you will be called in to have them secured.

The clear or porcelain coloured brackets will be attached to your teeth using dental cement. An archwire is then placed and is trimmed to size.

Post-fitting, it is normal to experience a feeling of tightness or mild discomfort. This should disappear in a few days and should be manageable with over the counter painkillers.

Adjusting

As this is a fitted brace, you will be required to visit us at Harbour Dental on average every 4 weeks, so our team can adjust and tighten the brace. This will also provide us with the opportunity to monitor your progress, and to assess if the brace is working correctly.

Aftercare

When your treatment is complete and your teeth are straight, our team will provide you with a custom-fitted retainer.

Depending on how much movement was needed to straighten your smile will have a direct impact on how long you will need to wear the retainer for. Remember, if you skip the retainer, your teeth may relapse into their old positioning.
