Hygienists are specially trained to work as part of the dental team, to give mainly preventative dental health treatment and advice and to treat gum disease. They can also show you how to look after your teeth and gums at home, so that they stay healthy.
Dental hygienists may also take dental x-rays to help the dentist diagnose problems and decide on treatment and can place fissure sealants, apply fluoride varnishes and administer fluoride treatments. They can apply anti-bacterial gels and solutions under the gum to kill the bacteria causing gum disease.
